Abstract:

Agriculture sector of Punjab is a source of employment and livelihood for majority of its population, supplier
of raw material to industry and has important potential for economic development. These achievements are
outcomes of New Agriculture Strategy adopted in 1960s, which yielded positive outcomes until 1980s, such as
increased production, productivity, cropping area etc. Besides this rosy picture, this strategy has disrupted the
ecological balance of the state through the monoculture of wheat and rice crops leading to various issues including resilience, poverty, demographic challenges, socioeconomic problems, issues related to technology, storage and transportation, structural problems in agricultural marketing. Social innovation emerges as a promising solution to address these problems, as it emphasizes social responsibility over profit maximization. By integrating social innovations into rural development, agriculture sector’s sustainability can be effectively achieved. This study aims to investigate the problems and challenges faced by Punjab’s agriculture sector and propose social innovation as a lens through which to find solutions.
