Abstract:

The study was undertaken to analyze the trends in the growth of swine population and pork production in India. Secondary data on pig population and pork production were collected from various reports of livestock census, BAHS reports, DAHD Annual reports. Annual compound growth rate (ACGR) analysis was carried out to conclude trends in swine population and production. During the last three inter-census period, annual compound growth rate in pig population was negative. Pig population is highest in Assam (2.1 million) with a positive annual growth rate of 3.62 per cent, followed by Jharkhand (1.28 million) and Meghalaya (0.71 million). Pork production showed a positive growth rate of 11.70 per cent from 1999-2000 to 2008-09. But pork production showed a negative growth rate during 2009-10 to 2018-19 and 2019-20 to 2023-24 with ACGR of -1.13 per cent and -1.09 per cent, respectively. Hence, efforts must be made to restore a positive growth rate in both the population and production of the piggery sector.
