Performance of Growth, Instability and Comparative Advantage in Export of Fruits and Vegetables from India

Abstract:

This paper attempts to examine the performance including the growth, instability and comparative advantage
in export of fresh fruits and fresh vegetables from India. This study was based on secondary data for the period 2001-02 to 2019-20. The study revealed that the compound growth in export value of fruits and vegetable was found to be 7.09 and 9.84 per cent per annum. Both fruits as well as vegetables were showed medium degree of instability of 12.48 and 17.88 per cent during the study period. Among the major destination UAE was the largest market for Indian fruit export that registered highest growth of 13.37 per cent per annum. In case of vegetables Qatar reported highest growth in export at 21.88 per cent per annum. Both destinations for fruit and vegetables’
exports revealed significant growth at 1 per cent level of significance. The results also showed that estimated values of revealed comparative advantage (RCA), in export of fruit and vegetables were found to be less than unity with negative values of revealed symmetric comparative advantage (RSCA), during whole study period. It indicated that India had comparative disadvantage among the major exporters of fruits and vegetables.
