Abstract:
The research on the Communication of the Performing Arts of “Human Chess” as a Cultural Heritage aims to (1) study the history and development of human chess as a Thai performing art, (2) study the communication of the performing art of human chess as a cultural heritage, (3) study the communication of performing arts through verbal language, non-verbal language, dance postures, and music for performing human chess, 4) study the feasibility of performing human chess to be an intangible cultural heritage according to UNESCO, and (5) study the communication formats of performing human chess in various contexts. The researcher used a mixed research methodology of quantitative and qualitative research. The study results found that human chess was developed from Thai chess as a board game and is a cultural heritage of Thailand. In terms of communication through human chess, this research found that human chess is an integrated and interconnected form of communication, involving Wai Khru ceremony (paying homage to teachers) as ritual communication, singing as verbal communication, music as musical communication, dance as body language
(nonverbal) communication, and performance as arts performance communication. Therefore, the researcher found that the idea to conserve, continue, and develop human chess alongside Thai chess, would help to spread human chess both domestically and internationally. It would thus make human chess unique to the Sports Association of Thailand under royal patronage. In addition, the ceremonies to pay homage to teachers, show Thainess, reflecting a major cultural heritage of Thailand.
